Southern Georgia

Great anchorage at Fernandina Beach but we find we have gotten spoiled. First off, we noticed that the homes around Jacksonville had the bug screens on the back—good reason. The no see-ums and biting black flies have been found and the fly swatters are out. There are 2 wood pulp factories here and we woke up in the middle of the night to the worst smells and lastly the water is brown. Good news though, the sunset was spectacular. We picked up a traveling buddy –another trawler going the same speed called Arkansas Traveler--they are going 60-70 miles today because they are meeting friends in Charleston for the weekend. Today we saw a submarine pen in St. Mary Sound and a range for guiding big ships into the channel. We saw the wild horses on the Cumberland Island Nature Park—Karen sent a note about visiting this island and we were already cruising before we read her advice and go see the sites here. What we saw of this huge island was fascinating we will go back when we get the chance. Tonight we went into St. Simon Village and ate dinner and went to the lighthouse. This is a lovely community with a fabulous golf course and quaint shops.
Wonder how many boats have run aground using this marker and lighthouse
