Savannah

We decided to stay at Thunderbolt Marina for a variety of reasons. Our first choice was downtown Savannah because we enjoyed being downtown St. Augustine so much but Savannah is 7 miles off the ICW up the Savannah river and the 2nd largest shipping port in America (read BIG boats going in and out of that narrow river) and the dockage cost was double. So, we took a cab into Savannah bright and early to spend the day. Starting with a tour of the city, we then went back to the parts that interested us the most—that being the river with the huge container ships going in and out. Then we had Happy Hour on the top of the Bohemian Hotel and watched the ships. The tour told us that these big ships have 24 hours to unload/load their cargo and some of them were as tall as the 5 story buildings on River Street. James Oglethorpe planned and built the city around a series of squares back in the 1700’s. Cotton was king in the early days and brought a lot of wealth so the homes and museums are numerous and fabulous. It was first populated with people from Britain’s Debtors prison, Juliet Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts here in early 1900’s plus the Telfair Sisters, John Jay, etc. make this an interesting city.
We are on the 8th Floor--these ships are huge

Across the river is a bige Weston Resort Hotel and marina for the brave

Cool WWII Memorial

Old Time Candy in a massive display--the pralines were the best
