Clayton, NY is a quaint burg on Lake Ontario of around 2,000 people,
full of restored homes, a handful of neat restaurants and shops and the home of
the Antique Boat Museum (ABM)- has a major population growth in the summer (tourist and summer homes). The
municipal docks are located in the middle of it all and the foggy morning was a
great time to take in a museum. Bella’s
was the breakfast place of choice (stuffed French toast-yum) and then on to
ABM. The museum was very interesting and
had some of the more beautiful wooden boats and chronicling boat racing in
northern NY and Canada from the late 1800’s.
The names mentioned are Gar Wood, Sir Malcolm Campbell and Horace Dodge
(sister Delphine was a racer and seemed like quite a woman). It took us about 4 hours to get our fill –we tagged
onto guides who were taking the Penn-Ohio antique car club through so we got a
lot of the local lore on the boats/people—fun. After
an afternoon of shopping and docktails on deck with the sun beating down we
plotted our entrance into Canada.
