Crossing Lake Ontario

Great dinner (and pretty cocktails) at Alex's on the Water in Oswego

Navy and white water

When we headed up the St. Lawrence River the still windmills dotted the coast.
We went through our last New York lock and had a great dinner at Alex’s on the Water in Oswego (best dinner out so far).  We wanted to get an early start Sunday morning to cross Lake Ontario—the wind, weather and waves all looked favorable.  We awoke to a beautiful sunny morning and we were going to cross with Rahn de Vous but our port engine didn’t start right away. At 7am we helped Craig and Karen off—Terry fixed a switch and we shoved off at 8am.    The water was a wonderful navy blue with white on the wake peaks—so clear (the locals report that it is thus because of the zebra mussels that have invaded the area in the past 10 years—they cleaned up the water so much you can drink it)  We had the smoothest water over a big body of water so I hate to complain BUT… we froze to death.  When we left Oswego it was 65 degrees--- not bad, shorts and sweatshirts.  After an hour the sweat pants came on… after two hours the winter coats came out--- it was in the low 50’s.  We hardly saw any boats for 4 hours.  Then we turned up the St. Lawrence River and the temperature started climbing.  By the time we docked out came the shorts and  T-shirts for the 75 degree weather.  Crazy. We are in Clayton, NY, right across the Canadian  border, home of the Antique Boat Museum and 1000 Island Inn (of Thousand Island salad dressing fame).  It is a really cute little town and we will stay here Monday and probably leave Tuesday or Wed. for the castles and then go on to Canada.
