Retirement, leaving Nashville, Niagara Falls, Sunny Days at Winter Harbor

Busy week this first week of June.  I retired from Vanderbilt after 23 years, we said “goodbye” to the kids (for 4 months!) we reunited with Sunny Days at Winter Harbor in Brewerton, NY and we visited Niagara Falls for the first time ever.  All exciting events in our lives.

This past 10 months back at Vanderbilt were a good wrap on a fun career.  I started in PC support in 1992 when we were transitioning from DOS to Windows 3.1 and now I have Windows 8.1—how lucky was I to be part of the growth of computers in the workplace.  All the people I worked with and many that I supported followed this blog for the first part of the Loop and were very encouraging.

Leaving the kids was a little tougher this time—Nick and Katie and Scott have been very supportive of our travels—Leeton and Holden are older and more aware of our leaving for a longer time.  They changed a lot every time we didn’t see them for two weeks—what will it be like after 4 months?

The flight to NY and reuniting with Sunny Days was uneventful.  She was still in the warehouse when we arrived on the morning of June 3rd and looked to be in good shape.  Our friends on Rahn-De-Vous (Karen and Craig) and Starlite happened to be here- we traveled the Erie Canal with them last August and it was good to hear about their year and how they had found their boat.  Starlite had had critters on the boat over the winter and they made a mess.  Rahn-De-Vous and Sunny Days had a thin layer of dust on everything but otherwise fine.

We spent a little time with the Winter Harbor crew to set up a couple of projects before the launch on June 5th and then took off for a road trip to Niagara Falls.  Neither Fitz nor I had ever been there and our route into Canada did not involve going that way.  The Falls were all they are built up to be—magnificent.  I inadvertently booked us in a Canadian Hotel (which presented our first venture into the currency exchange) but it had a fabulous view of the Falls and after a wet ride on the Maid of the Mist we enjoyed exploring the town and people watching.

Leaving the Falls we went through Customs (got flagged and so they searched our car—probably because we had big suitcases for an overnight) and returned to Sunny Days.  She was in the water and ready for us to cleanup and make sure all the mechanical parts are in working order.  We had a terrific Italian dinner at DG’s with Karen and Craig last night and spent our first night back on Sunny Days.  So far so good

Send off words of wisdom from my co-workers
Send off from the crew--I'll miss them
