Quantico and Mt. Vernon

Mt. Vernon was one of those places neither of us has been and we were excited to visit. So we left out of our anchorage in Port Tobacco River early –on the way we passed the huge Quantico Base where there was a lot of helicopter action. We made it to Mt. Vernon by noon and anchored at the base and dingy-ed in. It was truly fascinating and as Fitz says it is getting us in shape to take on DC. The restoration of the home, grounds and outbuildings by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association is fabulous and it is all done with private funds. Both George and Martha were quite admirable. The highlight for me was a lady they have playing Martha Washington holding court in one of the buildings—it is an “informal conversation” with Martha with an audience of about 25 people and she looked like Martha and set you back in the time period with the questions and answers. It was all we wanted but very warm (90 degrees)—we came back to the boat and gulped water for an hour.
Quantico--look at the center and you can see a big helicopter
