We left Belhaven mid-day after waiting for the mail (which did not have our part) and headed through the desolate, wide Alligator River with all its crab pots. We found a beautiful anchorage on South Lake right before the Albemarle River that gave us the best sunset on the Atlantic side of the ICW. We were out in the middle of nowhere so we watched a movie, The Iron Lady—big disappointment. Margaret Thatcher is greatly admired in this household and the people that made this movie did not seem to like her at all. Today we are breaking our rule of not cruising the ICW on the weekend but we have 3 perfect weather days and it took us a while to get out of Belhaven. Dismal Swamp or the Virginia Cut—that is the big decision offering 2 different routes for the last 79 miles into Norfolk. Just the name Dismal Swamp is off-putting enough but we are taking a little wider water and getting some cheap fuel on the Virginia Cut. Coinjock is at mile 50 (meaning it is 50 miles from Norfolk) and is said to have a fabulous Prime Rib Dinner that you have to reserve ahead of time and a cool T-shirt that says whereinthehelliscoinjock on the front and a map of where it is on the back—we will surely add to the economy here. Then on to as Terry O’Donnell says: “The Biggest Damn Water You Have Ever Seen” that being Norfolk.
Thanks for the heads up on The Iron Lady. It was on my Netflix list but I won't waste my time. Love the neat boat!
