Key Largo is the anchorage at present and it is on a beautiful bay called Tarpon Basin. We needed to water up and collect our bikes and had to almost take a reservation to get into the dock at Boot Key so we got a late start out of Marathon yesterday (Island Time). Everyone was taking this dip in the winds and calmer seas to head out. We headed north about 11am on the Gulf side because it is shorter and more protected waters. It is also very shallow. It is remarkable, you have this open expanse of water but it is no deeper than 7 to 8 ft. deep and the tide is about a foot and a half so you have to stay in the channel—skinny water. The crab pots abound –Terry wonders why they are not cheaper in the stores—so you have to stay alert. The engines didn’t do so well at higher RPM’s so Fitz did what he called an Italian Tune Up. In other words, we went slowly with bursts of speed. A Go Fast boat passed us in a very narrow cut and it is the closest I have come to flipping a bird in a long time. We got to Key Largo about 7pm took a little while to find some sand to dig in the anchor and barely made Sunset. The Jack Daniels was particularly tasty. The Oldies with Scott Shannon followed us and they are advertising the concert of Eric Burden and the Animals (House of the Rising Sun) we are surprised they are still alive.
