Leaving the Chesapeake –the Canal

The Chesapeake and Delaware Canal is at the tip of the Chesapeake Bay and cuts through to the Delaware River. This canal was built back in the early 1800’s and allows boat traffic a short cut from New York City to Washington and Baltimore—we took advantage. The afternoon was forecast to be rocky and windy so we took off from Baltimore Yacht Club around 7:30am and reached the other side of the canal by 2pm. Delaware City Marina is ½ a mile from the great little town and even better –they have a Captain’s meeting every day at 17:15 to discuss traveling the next day (or not) down the Delaware River to Cape May, NJ—our next stop. Summing up our month on the Chesapeake—we LOVED Annapolis and Washington, DC, the anchorages were really pretty, charming small/historic towns, and the water and winds made for unpredictable traveling.
Watch out for schoaling along the canal!

Boats line up at Delaware City Marina

There used to be locks here but now you just go out on the Delaware to get to the dock

They have a Blacksmith here
